4G Bulb project

At the beginning of term Mrs Steel asked all the classes to come up with ‘something’ that they would be able to look back on and say ’we did that!’ After lots of deliberation 4G decided on a ‘bulb project’. We wanted to plant a giant ‘AKS’ in the grass at the front of the school, using colourful bulbs. We thought it will look great in the Spring when the bulbs flower.
So… we made a Project plan for ourselves. We had to work out how big to make the letters, how many bulbs that would need, how much they would cost and of course, how we would raise the money!

The first step involved us marking out where we thought the letters should be. From that we had to calculate how many bulbs, so back in the classroom we used some blocks to work out how many bulbs we’d need for each letter. It would take an amazing 1,300 crocus bulbs altogether!

Next … what would it cost? So we did some research using the internet. But how to raise the money? We decided to have a sponsored basketball shoot. How many baskets could we score in one hour? We actually raised more than enough money to pay for our crocus bulbs so we donated the rest to the Cumbria Flood Relief Fund.

The bulbs were duly ordered, the giant AKS letters marked out and then the planting began. It takes a long time to plant 1,300 crocus bulbs but we eventually got the job done!

Now, every time we come up the path to the front entrance we have a peek to see if any shoots are coming up, and are really looking forward to what we hope will be a fantastic sight when all the crocus flowers bloom in the Spring, and we can say ‘We did that!’
