Local Authority Operational Brief for
Number and range of places
100 places for pupils aged between 4 and 16
Geographical area covered
Tewkesbury and surrounding district
Particular Special Needs of children attending:
The school is for pupils whose special needs have been identified from the broad category of MLD,
according to severity, as:
- Moderate and additional learning difficulties (MALD)
- Complex difficulties (CLD)
Included in both these categories may be children who have been diagnosed as having an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD)
There is also the capacity to meet the needs of a few pupils with
- Severe learning difficulties (SLD) or
- Profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)
where it is felt that the school is the most appropriate setting to meet the needs of the individuals concerned.
All pupils will have a statement. Admission is based on the needs of the individual child or young person and may take place at any point in the year.
Pupils will be considered through the subsequent process of the Annual Review, for potential reintegration into mainstream school with appropriate support.
Transition reviews, held when the pupil is approaching the age of 16, will determine the most appropriate post-16 placement. This will include consideration of Further Education (FE) provision, or transfer to one of the other specialist post-16 centres in the county.
Other provision made by the school
In liaison with the local Primary Care Trust, all pupils in the school will have access, as and when it is appropriate, to:
- Speech and Language Therapy (SALT)
- Occupational Therapy
- Physiotherapy
As part of its designation, the school is developing its role of providing, in liaison with all Gloucestershire special schools, an outreach consultancy service for colleagues and pupils in mainstream schools. This service is enabling the school to extend its partnership with a range of mainstream schools in the county and so develop the expertise of staff in both sectors to meet the needs of all children and young people in Gloucestershire who have special needs.
General Admissions Procedure
All referrals for placement are discussed and decided by the Local Authority’s Special Needs Resource Panel, which meets fortnightly, is chaired by the Education Officer for SEN, and includes a representative from the Head teachers of the County’s Special Schools. The views of an Educational Psychologist are always sought when a request for admission to a special school is made.
