“We aim to encourage a love of learning which makes learning fun so that our pupils acquire the learning habit and want to develop their skills, knowledge and insights throughout their lives.” Gloucestershire Curriculum Policy

Introduction

The curriculum at Alderman Knight encompasses all the planned activities that we organise in order to promote learning, personal growth and development. It includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also the range of extra-curricular activities that the school provides in order to enrich the experience of the children.

The curriculum reflects our commitment to the belief that ‘Every Child Matters’. We aim to

§         Establish a safe, secure and supportive ethos

§         Support our pupils in making healthy choices

§         Remove barriers to learning so pupils can enjoy and achieve

§         Ensure pupils listened to and encouraged to lead their own learning

§         Support pupils in contributing to the wider community

Aims and Objectives

Alderman Knight is committed to providing a personalised curriculum with the individual pupil at the heart of everything we do. We aim to provide a broad and balanced, enriched and extended curriculum tailored to individual needs. Therefore the curriculum is planned to recognise and meet the individual learning needs of each pupil and is differentiated to ensure learning opportunities are both challenging and appropriate. We aim to provide stimulating activities which will help pupils to make a successful transition to adulthood and to be active and responsible citizens.

The national curriculum sets out three principles which underpin our approach to curriculum development. These are to

n       set suitable learning challenges

n       respond to pupils diverse learning needs

n       overcome potential barriers to learning and assessment

The aims of the school are:

§         to provide pupils with an enriched and extended curriculum tailored to individual needs.

§         to help pupils develop positive feelings of self-worth and confidence.

§         to enable them to make a successful transition to adulthood and to be active and responsible citizens

The aims of the school curriculum are:

§         to fulfil all the requirements of the National Curriculum and the Locally Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education;

§         to promote a positive attitude towards learning, so that children enjoy coming to school, and acquire a solid basis for lifelong learning;

§         to enable all children to learn and develop a range of skills to the best of their ability including those of literacy, numeracy and information technology;

§         to enable children to be creative and to develop their own thinking;

§         to teach children about their developing world;

§         to teach children to have an awareness of their own spiritual development, and to understand right from wrong;

§         to help children understand the importance of truth and fairness, so that they grow up committed to equal opportunities for all;

§         to enable children to have respect for themselves and positive self-esteem, and to be able to live and work co-operatively with others.
